Located on the Department's main site, the James Dyson Building is a 4-storey building that provides a mix of cellular and open plan offices, teaching and meeting spaces. It offers contemporary facilities within a highly energy efficient design, and was recently short listed for a RIBA regional award. The building is currently occupied by academics and research students across several divisions.
This a £13.2m project, was made possible by an £8m donation from the Dyson Foundation. Construction started at the end of 2014 and the project was delivered within budget in April 2016. Sir James Dyson officially opened the building in May and the majority of users moved in during June.
Post-construction work undertaken by the Building Projects team included managing the furniture fit-out process, carpet fitting, installation of all kitchen equipment and staff relocation. During the first year of occupation fine tuning of the ventilation and other building systems continued, along with the rectification of defects. The radiators in the meeting rooms were replaced to increase the space available for furniture and to reduce the risk of damage.
